Library Aide Life - Our Expectations...

DO:

  • Arrive on time and be ready to work.

  • Get permission and take a hall pass when you leave the library for any reason.

  • Complete all your daily and weekly library tasks before getting permission to do anything else.

  • Ask questions if you do not understand a task or if instructions are unclear. Ask questions, please!  We love questions!

  • Complete your fair share of work load and do quality work.

  • Learn library and technology skills needed to perform your job.

  • Follow all Trussville City Schools' district, school, library, and technology rules and guidelines.

  • Answer Mrs. McFarland's or Mrs. Brockman's phone if it rings when they are busy. Take a written message and be sure that they receive it.  Be cheerful and professional! "Library.  This is __________.  How can I help you?"

  • Clear the circulation desk area before you leave EVERY DAY. Return things to their proper place even if you were not the one to move or use them.

  • Help students or teachers in locating books, printing documents, checking out, paying fines, and in answering their questions.

  • Be respectful and quiet when classes are present! Help those you can help with their assignments.

  • When working on a project or library assignment, continue working until the project is complete, until the end of the class period, or until Mrs. McFarland or Mrs. Brockman gives you the okay to stop.

  • Remember your purpose in being here. Do not have extended visits with friends while working.

  • Get help from the librarian if you are not sure of how to help a patron.  Do not turn anyone away because you don't know how to do something.

  • ONLY use the ciruclation computer to access the library program, Google drive for printing, or the library website.  This means no random Googling, no gaming, no shopping, etc.  Be professional!

  • Remember you are here to serve others.

DON'T:

  • Leave the circulation desk unattended. If you are shelving, straightening your section, or running an errand make sure you have the desk covered.

  • Look like you have nothing constructive to do; when the administration or a teacher walks through the library door you should be actively engaged in doing something constructive with your time! (Think public relations and professionalism.) If you have nothing else to do, READ.

  • Leave the library without permission.

  • Don’t sit on tables and desks, sit on the floor or lie down behind the circulation desk, lie down on the red furniture or on the sofas in the back. Do not allow others to either.

  • Do not waste supplies or play with supplies at the circulation desk, or doodle on the library calendar.

  • Have food, candy, gum, or drink (other than water) while working in the library.  Eat during breakfast and your lunchtime.

  • Don’t allow patrons into the library area with food or drink—they should finish and throw items into to the trash can at the circulation desk area.

  • Disturb classes and students in the library while they are having class or are working. Be conscious of your volume!
